Marc Jacobs and Derek Lam may have set off a buzz at NYFW, but it was the Oscar de la Renta tots who were the real showstoppers of the week, adding a much-appreciated jolt of joy to the runway. The atmosphere at his first-ever Spring ’13 kids’ collection was fun, lively, and upbeat. Everyone in the room – Oscar included! – burst into big smiles and giggles as each pint-sized model trotted down the runway, one cuter than the next. These are pure de la Renta looks, but perfectly transformed and appropriated to be super-adorable: dress-up dresses with tiers, embellishments, and floral patterns fit for Easter Sunday, along with easy, everyday sundresses and hand-crocheted jackets for the girls, and boys dapper in striped jackets and matching shorts, but also comfortable in simple button-ups and khaki shorts. So many looks to fit in to any lifestyle, though all very snobby, of course
Boys zooming down on scooters, a bigger girl pulling a smaller girl in a radio flyer wagon, and bopping heads in their Beats headphones. Never had I laughed so much and had so much fun ooohing and aaahing at a show. It was the best show of the week by far! And the models did an amazing job.
